Radical Discourse: Freedom 101

Location: a NYC public park TBD

What is the unfreedom all around us and how can we better see it? Once it’s properly identified, how can we conceive of practical alternatives? Anticapitalism for Artists facilitators invite you to join your fellow artists in the open air, two feet on the earth, to build critical consciousness around the fundamentals of how capitalism functions to our detriment.

Through guided dialog with other participants, you will leave confidently able to put a name to the disorienting unfreedom and exploitation you’ve always experienced.  This event is perfect for those new to class politics or those wanting a refresher on the foundations. The event will be grounded in a minimal amount of accessible materials assigned beforehand. Radical Discourse: Freedom 101 is a participatory, embodied opportunity to reclaim the knowledge and agency you already possess through spontaneous discussion.

Radical Discourse: Freedom 101 is FREE with RSVP (donations accepted) and open to artists of all disciplines, practices, and abilities. Snacks and beverages will be provided.

Materials to prepare:

We ask that at a minimum, you prepare by watching the first hour of the below Richard Wolff video (the Q&A section which follows is not required).
Richard D. Wolff Lecture on Worker Coops

If you’d like to keep going, we highly recommend also reading this classic, surprisingly accessible speech Marx delivered that makes a similar argument as Prof. Wolff. It will take approximately 15 minutes depending on your reading speed.
Wage Labour and Capital, Marx - Ch 1: What are Wages? How are they Determined?

Lastly, if you have time and want to understand more of how this relates to political education and the vitality of your own lived experience, read the first chapter of Paulo Friere’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed.
